The goal of these groups is to provide the participants with a positive and supportive atmosphere where social situations, rules, and norms can be introduced, explained and taught with the hope of increasing social skills individuals with ASD. All groups follow the same structure and routine, however, the curricula are often developed based on the needs identified by both the participants and the caregivers throughout the year. Some topics that may be worked on throughout the year include asking a friend to go on an outing, good sportsmanship, and teasing and bullying issues as well as social amenities and emotions. In the vocational program, skills such as resume writing, job interview skills and social skills in the workforce are the worked on areas. The Autism Resource Centre (ARC) runs Social Skills Groups and Adult Vocational Groups that are offered during the week in a semester. Semester one runs October to December and semester two is January to March. The groups are generally 1 to 1 1/2 hours in length. The participants in each group have received a diagnosis of Asperger's Disorder, High Functioning Autism (HFA), or Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). The participants are similar in age, abilities, and interests. There is a maximum of eight individuals per group with a minimum of two adult facilitators. The cost to attend $25 per group (10 sessions in a group)and you must be a member of ARC.
