Autism Resource Centre

“To achieve a meaningful and independent life for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder through education, awareness and programming.”

Social Skills Group

The goal of these groups is to provide the participants with a positive and supportive atmosphere where social situations, rules, and norms can be introduced, explained and taught with the hope of increasing social skills individuals with ASD. All groups follow the same structure and routine, however, the curricula are often developed based on the needs identified by both the participants and the caregivers throughout the year. Some topics that may be worked on throughout the year include asking a friend to play, good sportsmanship, and teasing and bullying issues as well as social amenities and emotions.

The Autism Resource Centre (ARC) runs  Social Skills Groups that are offered weekly Monday-Thursday during the school year. Semester one runs October to December and semester two is January to March.  The groups  are generally  between 1 to 1 1/2   hours in length. The participants in each group have received a diagnosis of Asperger's Disorder, High Functioning Autism (HFA), or Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). The participants are similar in age, abilities, and interests. There is a maximum of six individuals per group with a minimum of two adult facilitators.

The cost to attend social skills group is $75.00  per semester and you must be a member of ARC.  Participants may register for only one semester.
